Learn more about interpreting qualitative data from CCWB Contributors Overlap Associates.

This Interpretation Guide walks you step-by-step through the process of interpreting the information you’ve collected using postcards, empathy maps, surveys, interviews, or focus group data.

This process produces analysis of qualitative data in a structured and systematic way.

We’ve simplified it into 6 key steps:

  • Collect the Data

  • Transcribe Initial Insights

  • Uncover Findings

  • Uncover Themes

  • Uncover Insights

  • Seek Feedback

Interpretation Guide Instructions

The process of qualitative analysis takes time, reflection, and regular breaks. It will be important to recognize how your own experiences influence the way you analyze what you’ve collected.

Work in groups of 2 or 3 to check your assumptions against the lived experience of other people. Working collaboratively through the analysis will help you find deeper connections between people, challenges, and solutions.

Remember to take some time and share your analysis and understanding with clients and community members. Make sure to make an effort to receive and integrate their feedback into your own interpretation.

  • Rapidly read through all data points and write all the themes that stand out on stickies

  • Use 10% of your raw data to make your buckets, use another 10% to fill your buckets and continue adding 10% until you stop adding new buckets or are out of time

  • Remember only ONE insight per sticky note—you don’t need a finer sharpie, you need more sticky notes

  • Transcribe and analyze at the same time
