What is the Emoji Wheel?

  • An Emoji Wheel is a tool used to help children and adults/caregivers reflect on their day and emotions together

  • It helps to frame a conversation in a trauma-informed way with an adult/ caregiver

  • Children and adults/caregivers often feel buy-in when completing the sheet together

  • It allows the adult/caregiver to reflect back the emotions of the child and to share their own (ask, describe, show and tell)

When do I use it?

  • When you want to have a focused conversation about emotions and understanding facial expressions

  • As a research tool, it helps to gain an understanding of the general state of the child and adult/caregiver

How do I use it?

  • Ask or help children identify which three emojis they are feeling

  • Ask what happened in the child’s day

  • The adult/caregiver also participates by choosing three emojis and reflecting on their day

Tips and Tricks

  • Remember that there is no one way to complete the Emoji Wheel. It needs to be tailored to the child’s emotional state in the moment
